Nothing happened, or it stopped part-way? Download it again. Some browsers ask for permission before they start; look for a prompt or a downloads icon.
Tested on one Windows 10 22H2 computer: installing, reading, selecting text, Find meaning, the search panel, full screen, quitting and uninstalling. Not yet tested: Windows 11, a computer without Microsoft's WebView2 Runtime, other display scales, installing for all users, and Windows on ARM.
Windows will probably show a warning
The installer is unsigned, so Windows reports an unknown publisher
Windows SmartScreen warns about installers from publishers it doesn't recognise. This installer isn't signed with a code-signing certificate (the project hasn't bought one), so Windows can't tell who made it. The warning is accurate: it is the protection doing its job. Your browser may also say the file isn't commonly downloaded, for the same reason.
What you can check: that the file matches the number published on this page (see "Check the download" below). That shows it is the file this project published and that it wasn't damaged or altered on the way.
Whether to run an unsigned installer is your decision. If you aren't comfortable with it, don't run it. This page doesn't tell you how to get past the warning: that choice belongs to you, on the screen in front of you.
Before you start
You need 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1809 or newer) or Windows 11. To check, open Settings, then System, then About. "System type" should say 64-bit, and the version is under "Windows specifications".
The search panel uses Microsoft's WebView2 Runtime. It comes with Windows 11 and most Windows 10 computers. The installer is built to add it when it is missing; that case hasn't been tested.
Install
-
Open the file you downloaded
It is called
DNDReader-0.3.0-setup-x64.exe. Open it from your browser's downloads list or from your Downloads folder. -
Read any Windows warning
See "Windows will probably show a warning" above. Decide for yourself, ideally after checking the download.
-
Follow the installer
It installs for your own account and doesn't ask for administrator rights unless you choose to install for everyone. It offers DNDReader under Open with for PDF files.
-
Open DNDReader
Start it from the Start menu, or right-click a PDF, choose Open with, and pick DNDReader.
Check the download
Check that the file is the one published (recommended, because the installer is unsigned)
A checksum is a fingerprint of a file. If the one you calculate matches the one published here, the file arrived complete and unaltered.
880026ddcb5c39314a8734ab75ef6f9dea5eee9efb180979c568b0f9de594722 Get-FileHash "$HOME\Downloads\DNDReader-0.3.0-setup-x64.exe" -Algorithm SHA256 certutil -hashfile "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\DNDReader-0.3.0-setup-x64.exe" SHA256 Compare the result with the published number. Every character must match; capital and lower-case letters don't matter. Windows prints capitals.
If the numbers are different
Do not run or install the file. Delete it, download it again from this page, and check again. If it still differs, open an issue and say which file and what you got.
A matching checksum shows the file is the one published, intact. It can't show the release itself is trustworthy, because the file and its number come from the same place.
If something goes wrong
- "This app can't run on your PC". The computer is probably 32-bit or older than Windows 10 version 1809. See "Before you start".
- The search panel says it is unavailable. The WebView2 Runtime may be missing. You can get it from Microsoft's WebView2 page.
- The download stopped part-way. Use Download it again from the panel above, or resume it from your browser's download list.
- The checksum doesn't match. Don't run it. See "Check the download".
- Anything else. Open an issue and say what you saw.
Uninstall
Open Settings, then Apps, find DNDReader in the list, and choose Uninstall.
