Why is it so large? Linux has no built-in web view that DNDReader can use for the search panel, so this package carries its own copy of the Chromium browser engine. It takes about 1.5 GB of disk space once installed. The Windows and Android versions use a browser engine already on the computer or phone, which is why they are much smaller.

Nothing happened, or it stopped part-way? Download it again. Some browsers ask for permission before they start; look for a prompt or a downloads icon.
Tested on Ubuntu 26.04 (64-bit Intel or AMD), installed from this package. Other Ubuntu releases and other Linux distributions have not been tested. The package's dependencies were taken from a 26.04 machine, so it may refuse to install elsewhere.
Before you start
You need Ubuntu 26.04 on a 64-bit Intel or AMD computer, and about 1.5 GB of free disk space. Not sure? Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal and run these two commands. They should print 26.04 and amd64.
lsb_release -rs dpkg --print-architecture Install
-
Open a terminal
Press Ctrl+Alt+T.
-
Go to your downloads
Browsers on Ubuntu save to the Downloads folder by default.
cd ~/Downloads -
Install the package
sudo apt install ./dndreader_0.3.0-1_amd64.debKeep the
./at the start: it tells apt the package is a file on this computer. It asks for your password and shows what it will install. -
Open DNDReader
Find DNDReader in your applications. You can also right-click a PDF, choose Open With, and pick DNDReader.
Check the download
Check that the file is the one published (optional)
A checksum is a fingerprint of a file. If the one you calculate matches the one published here, the file arrived complete and unaltered.
2c04973edb4c16cab7189a0e99606edac337399e630f9acf9156dd6f7e4635fd sha256sum ~/Downloads/dndreader_0.3.0-1_amd64.deb Compare the result with the published number. Every character must match; capital and lower-case letters don't matter. Windows prints capitals.
If the numbers are different
Do not run or install the file. Delete it, download it again from this page, and check again. If it still differs, open an issue and say which file and what you got.
A matching checksum shows the file is the one published, intact. It can't show the release itself is trustworthy, because the file and its number come from the same place.
What to expect
The search panel runs in a browser sandbox, or not at all
The package installs a security profile so the search panel's browser can run inside its sandbox. If the sandbox can't start, DNDReader does not fall back to an unsandboxed browser: the panel says search is unavailable and offers to open the results in your own browser instead.
There is no automatic update
A package installed this way is not updated by Ubuntu. Because it bundles its own browser engine, security fixes for that engine reach you when you install a newer package from this site, in the same way.
If something goes wrong
- apt says the architecture is wrong, or a dependency can't be found. This usually means the computer isn't Ubuntu 26.04 on amd64. Run the two checks under "Before you start".
- The download stopped part-way. Use Download it again from the panel above, or resume it from your browser's download list; the server supports resuming.
- The panel says search is unavailable. See the sandbox note above.
- The checksum doesn't match. Don't install it. See "Check the download".
- Anything else. Open an issue and say what you saw.
Uninstall
sudo apt remove dndreader
